In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a former MLA from Bhopal has fallen victim to ATM card cloning, losing a staggering ₹6.84 lakh from his bank account. The scam, executed through skimming equipment installed at an ATM booth in Arera Colony, went undetected for months, allowing fraudsters to siphon off funds through 54 unauthorized transactions between February and May.
The fraud came to light when the victim received a notification indicating that his account balance had dwindled to just ₹92. Upon contacting the bank, he discovered that his entire savings had been wiped out. Investigations revealed that cybercriminals had installed a cloning device at the ATM, enabling them to replicate the former legislator’s card and carry out multiple fraudulent withdrawals and purchases.
Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage from the ATM booth and a showroom in MP Nagar, where a transaction of over ₹52,000 was made using the cloned card. The cybercrime branch is working closely with the bank to trace the movement of the stolen funds and identify the perpetrators.
Authorities urge citizens to regularly monitor their bank statements, enable transaction alerts, and exercise caution while using ATMs to prevent falling prey to such scams.
