Kolkata Police to Strengthen Cyber Cell Amid Rising E-Frauds

Mar 9 / Nayanika
In response to a surge in cybercrimes, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Manoj Verma, has announced significant reforms to the city's cyber cell. The proposal includes the creation of two new positions: Joint CP Cyber and Joint CP Legal. These roles aim to expedite the recovery of funds blocked during cyber fraud incidents and enhance coordination with interstate agencies.

The cyber cell will be split into smaller units, each with specific tasks, to tackle the increasing number of cybercrimes more effectively. The new structure will include branches such as the Organised Cyber Crime Branch, Cyber Security and Safety Branch, Cyber Fraud Recovery Branch, Cyber Forensic Lab, and Cyber Crime Coordination and Support Branch. These branches will operate under the chief of detectives of Kolkata Police, with a dedicated team of inspectors, officers, and constables.

Commissioner Verma emphasized the importance of returning blocked funds to victims quickly and without obstacles. The proposed reforms are expected to be approved in the upcoming cabinet meeting, marking a significant step towards combating cybercrime in an organized manner.
