These scams are being promoted by verified X (formerly Twitter) accounts with barely 10 to 15 followers, making them seem legitimate while actually operating as part of a larger fraud network. These fraudulent posts are crafted to look like news reports, creating a false sense of credibility and trust. Once users engage with these posts, they are redirected to scam websites or WhatsApp groups where they are manipulated into making financial transactions.
Dr. Sandeep Mittal, Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, Tamil Nadu, warned that such advertisements are “traps” designed to lure the public into cyber scams. He further stated: “Verified @X Handles, having 10 to 15 followers, promoting Shreya Ghoshal Ads are scam traps to lure public into cyber scams. Be alert, be safe……. @X should have a mechanism to detect and block such handles openly indulging in criminal activities.”
The warning comes shortly after Shreya Ghoshal herself revealed that her X account had been hacked since February 13. She publicly stated that despite multiple attempts to reach out to the X support team, she received only auto-generated responses, leaving her unable to regain control of her account or even delete it. This highlights another growing concern—hijacked social media accounts of celebrities being misused to spread scams.
As AI and cyber fraud tactics evolve, it is crucial for users to stay alert and verify the authenticity of social media promotions. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
✅ Verify Sources – Cross-check endorsements with official social media pages of celebrities.
✅ Watch for Red Flags – Be wary of investment schemes promising unrealistic returns.
✅ Report Suspicious Activity – Flag fraudulent posts and accounts to social media platforms and cybercrime authorities.
✅ Educate & Spread Awareness – The best defense against cyber fraud is an informed public. Share this with your network!
The Tamil Nadu Cyber Police has urged social media platforms like X to strengthen their mechanisms to detect and block fraudulent accounts openly indulging in criminal activities. However, as users, we must remain vigilant against AI-powered scams that exploit trust and familiarity.
