Apple Issues Spyware Threat Notifications to iPhone Users Worldwide

May 3 / Nayanika

Apple has recently issued spyware threat notifications, warning iPhone users in over 150 countries about potential targeting by mercenary spyware attacks. These attacks are far more sophisticated than typical cybercriminal activity, often focusing on individuals based on their profession or influence—such as journalists, activists, and diplomats.

Apple has published a support document detailing how it detects these threats and how affected users should respond. The company explains that these notifications are intended to inform and assist users who may have been individually targeted due to their work or public presence. Unlike general malware, mercenary spyware is highly advanced and well-funded, often deployed against a very small number of individuals.

Recently, two individuals—Ciro Pellegrino, an Italian journalist, and Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch right-wing activist—revealed that they received notifications from Apple, warning them of potential spyware targeting their iPhones. Pellegrino shared a screenshot of the email, which stated that Apple had detected an attempt to remotely compromise his device. Vlaardingerbroek also posted on X, expressing concerns that the attack was an attempt to intimidate her.

Apple has outlined its notification process, stating that affected users receive alerts via email and iMessage from official Apple addresses. These messages include details and steps users should follow to protect their devices, including enabling Lockdown Mode, a security feature designed to limit device functionality and reduce the risk of spyware infiltration.

The company reassures users that the vast majority will never be targeted by such attacks, but those who receive notifications should take them seriously. Apple has been sending these alerts multiple times a year since 2021, informing users across 150+ countries whenever it detects mercenary spyware activity.
