Instagram has announced the testing of an AI-powered tool designed to identify teen users who may misrepresent their age. This initiative ensures that such accounts are automatically placed under "Instagram Teen Accounts," which come with protective, age-appropriate settings. The move is part of Instagram's broader efforts to create safer digital spaces for younger users amidst growing concerns about the impact of social media on mental health and well-being.
The AI tool works by analyzing various signals, such as the type of content an account interacts with, when the account was created, and other profile information. If flagged, the account is automatically transitioned to a Teen Account, which includes the following features:
· Privacy by Default: Teen accounts are private, with restricted DMs and follower approval.
· Sensitive Content Filters: Harmful or inappropriate content is limited.
· Usage Notifications: Reminders sent after 60 minutes of daily use.
· Sleep Mode: Notifications muted from 10 PM to 7 AM.
· Parental Approval: Teens under 16 need consent to change settings.
Instagram has emphasized that while the AI tool is designed to be accurate, users will have the option to adjust their settings if flagged incorrectly. The initiative also includes efforts to educate parents about the importance of accurate age representation and the role of these protective measures.
Currently being tested in the U.S., Instagram plans to expand this initiative globally in the coming months. This AI-driven approach highlights the growing role of technology in addressing online safety challenges and sets a benchmark for fostering responsible digital engagement for younger users.
