HAL Falls Victim to Sophisticated Email Spoofing Scam, Loses ₹55 Lakh

Mar 20 / Nayanika
In a significant cyber fraud case, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a leading aerospace and defense company, lost ₹55 lakh during a transaction for fighter aircraft components. The fraudsters created a deceptive email address, closely resembling the legitimate one of the American supplier, PS Engineering Inc., by omitting a single letter. This subtle change went unnoticed, leading HAL to transfer $63,405 (approximately ₹55 lakh) to the scammers' account.

The scam came to light when HAL officials, after not receiving the ordered parts, contacted the supplier directly and discovered the payment had not been received. Investigations revealed that the criminals had likely monitored email exchanges between HAL and the supplier for weeks, enabling them to execute the scam with precision.

HAL has since filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station and cyber experts from IIT Kanpur have been brought in to assist with the investigation. In response to the breach, HAL has implemented stricter digital security measures, including mandatory video verification for international transactions and multi-level authentication for changes in payment details.

This incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of robust cybersecurity protocols in safeguarding sensitive transactions
