Hyderabad Government Employee Falls Victim to APK-Based Cyber Fraud

Jun 10 / Nayanika

In a concerning case of cyber fraud, a 59-year-old government employee in Hyderabad lost Rs 3.92 lakh after unknowingly installing a malicious APK file. The scammer, impersonating a relationship manager from a private bank, convinced the victim that there was an error in their registered address and that an APK file needed to be installed to rectify it. Once activated, the fraudulent app siphoned money from the victim’s account.

Cybercrime officials have emphasized that banks never send APK files or request KYC updates through third-party links. Fraudsters often exploit trust by posing as legitimate representatives, making it crucial for individuals to verify any unexpected requests directly with their bank.

With APK-based frauds becoming more prevalent, citizens must remain vigilant and avoid installing unknown applications from unverified sources. If you suspect fraudulent activity, report it immediately at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 for assistance.
