However, as the technology evolves, it has also introduced new challenges, particularly in areas of privacy and security. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, powered by the advanced GPT-4 model, has reached a concerning milestone: the ability to generate hyper-realistic fake documents. Among these, government-issued IDs like Aadhaar and PAN cards have surfaced, raising serious questions about their potential misuse in cybercrimes and fraud.

Recent tests and demonstrations have shown how easily this AI can create forged IDs when given carefully crafted prompts. Enthusiastic users have even shared instances of these fake documents on social media platforms like X. This revelation highlights the growing capabilities of generative AI in creating highly convincing replicas.


Despite not using real personal data, GPT-4 has been shown to produce fake IDs for public figures, amplifying concerns about its misuse. India Today’s investigation revealed just how realistic these fake documents can be, even for Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, passports, and voter IDs. Astonishingly, the model can produce a matching suite of forged documents, making it alarmingly easy for malicious actors to build an entirely false identity.


Even with safeguards in place, such as OpenAI’s embedded C2PA metadata designed to identify AI-generated content, the risks remain significant. India Today’s test found that even fake documents of high-profile figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be generated with slight prompt adjustments, bypassing the AI’s initial safeguards. Additionally, fake payment receipts and forged academic degrees have been produced, further demonstrating the scale of misuse.


Generative AI has undoubtedly revolutionized the world, but it has also exponentially increased the reach of document forgery and cybercrime. With such powerful tools becoming readily accessible, questions regarding regulation, ethical use, and privacy have become more urgent than ever.
